What is a Synology NAS device, and why should I use it?

NAS cloud backup is an encrypted cloud storage solution that copies your data on your device and in the cloud to protect files against hardware failure, theft, or local disasters.

Internxt connects to your Synology device through a Docker container, so backups leaving the network are already encrypted with AES-256 and Kyber-512 post-quantum cryptography with a zero-knowledge architecture.

While Synology NAS is effective for storing data, it can still be affected by risks, including hardware malfunctions, accidental loss, ransomware, and environmental events. Using cloud backup helps safeguard your data and makes recovery possible at any time.

Synology devices are designed with a strong focus on simplicity and integration, making cloud backup setup straightforward through tools like Hyper Backup and Cloud Sync. This allows you to easily connect to Internxt Drive without complex configurations.

Internxt integration with Synology NAS

Internxt installs on your NAS through a Docker container via our open-source CLI that connects your system to your account and creates a secure backup destination for your files. This exposes a mount point inside Synology DSM 7+ and sets up Hyper Backup, or HBS3, as a backup destination. Your data is encrypted before upload, so only encrypted files are sent to our European data centers.

Synology

Internxt NAS support for Synology runs through the Internxt CLI Docker image. Internxt integrates with Synology NAS via the Docker app, allowing connection to standard backup tools like Hyper Backup or file-level sync methods, allowing users to send NAS data directly to Internxt's encrypted cloud storage for off-site backup and disaster recovery. This integration simplifies backups while keeping full control of your existing workflow, and adding secure cloud storage from Internxt's Kyber-512 and AES-256 zero-knowledge encryption.

QNAP

QNAP NAS cloud backup uses the same Docker container approach as Synology. HBS3 (Hybrid Backup Sync 3) points at the exposed mount and pushes encrypted files to Internxt's European data centers. Your files are protected with Internxt's post-quantum and zero-knowledge encryption, and your NAS is the only device that holds the keys to decrypt your data.

Synology NAS backup solution

A reliable cloud backup solution like Internxt Drive is an essential strategy to protect your NAS data. Internxt offers Synology Hyper Backup and Synology Cloud Sync integration to ensure your files remain secure, accessible, and recoverable at all times. Synology devices also include features like versioning, compression, and deduplication to optimize your cloud backup solution.

Backup your Synology NAS in the cloud

NAS cloud backup sends your Synology NAS data to encrypted off-site storage where files survive hardware failure, theft, ransomware, or accidental deletion. Internxt's NAS support runs alongside your existing Synology Hyper Backup workflow. Every upload is encrypted on your device with Kyber-512 and AES-256 before it leaves the network, and your encryption keys never leave your hardware.

Data loss protection

Synology cloud backup includes features like RAID protection, helping keep files accessible even if a drive fails, while snapshot and version history features make it possible to recover deleted or changed files. Internxt with Synology NAS support helps protect against data loss by keeping all your files stored in one secure, centralized location. It supports automatic backups for computers, phones, servers, and external drives, reducing the risk of losing important data.

Real-time syncing

Features of Synology real-time syncing include automatic file updates across devices and backup locations, helping keep files current and accessible across all systems. Internxt with Synology NAS support ensures all changes are synced in real time, reducing the risk of outdated versions, lost updates, or accidental overwrites.

Security

Synology NAS reduces reliance on less private cloud providers, giving you full control over your own cloud with extra security features such as user permissions, 2FA, and password management. When combining a Synology NAS with Internxt Drive, you get zero-knowledge encryption with Kyber-512 and AES-256. As Internxt is fully open source and independently audited, you can feel safe knowing your data is protected by the best security and encryption.

Own your data

Own your data with Synology NAS by storing everything on your own device for total control over where your files are stored and how they are accessed. Internxt encrypts all your files and data on your side, so only you can access them, giving you full control over your data and private cloud storage.

What Internxt offers with Synology NAS support

Internxt offers NAS support for Synology to upload, sync, share, and backup your files in the cloud to protect files against data loss and ransomware.

Access from any device

Encrypted remote access lets you securely access the same cloud files from any device with Internxt installed. Apps for web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android all decrypt your files locally using your own key, so only you can see your data. This keeps everything in one secure place for your NAS, computer, or phone.

Ransomware protection

Ransomware recovery on a NAS depends on whether backups are accessible to the attacker. Internxt prevents this by keeping cloud backups encrypted with keys stored on your device, not on the NAS or in the cloud. Even if a Synology device is compromised, attackers can only encrypt local data, while cloud backups remain protected and inaccessible. Versioned snapshots also allow recovery of clean file versions before infection.

Set up your Synology NAS cloud backups

You can set up your Synology NAS cloud backups in three steps using our detailed tutorials from our open-source GitHub to guide you through each step. Discover more about our open-source cloud storage at internxt.com/open-source.

Questions? We have answers

It is a backup solution that continuously or periodically copies data from your Synology NAS device to a secure cloud environment. This creates an off-site copy of your files so they remain safe even if the physical NAS is damaged, lost, or compromised.

Cloud backup protects against multiple risks, including hardware failure, theft, ransomware attacks, accidental deletion, and site disasters like fire or flooding. It ensures you always have an external copy of your data that can be restored when needed.

Yes, Internxt encrypts your data with AES-256 and Kyber-512 post-quantum and zero-knowledge encryption. All your data is encrypted before it leaves your NAS and remains encrypted during transfer and while stored in the cloud. Encryption keys are held on your NAS, so nobody can access your files.

Yes, it is compatible with most Synology NAS models that support modern DSM versions and backup tools such as Hyper Backup or Synology Cloud Sync. Some older or entry-level models may have limited features.

The main Synology tools are Hyper Backup for full versioned backups and Cloud Sync for real-time synchronization with cloud storage providers.
